The final battle for Chattanooga took place on November 25, 1863, with the battle of Missionary Ridge. In defeat Braxton Bragg and the Confederate Army of Tennessee retreated south, toward Georgia. With the U.S. forces pursuing, division commander, Patrick Cleburne, made a stand at Ringgold Gap two days later, allowing Bragg to fight another day. The Gateway to the Deep South was now open.
