CWRT Meeting - Stonewall Jackson's Lone Defeat
Start Time: 6:30 PM
End Time: 7:30 PM

Bob Stone will discuss Jackson's defeat at the First Battle of Kernstown. Ordered by Robert E. Lee to keep the Federals occupied in the Shenandoah Valley, Stonewall Jackson saw an opening to start harassing James Shields' 11,000-man division at Winchester. Taking Turner Ashby's word that there were only four Union regiments on the field,  Jackson brought his small army (3,000/4,800) to a small village called Kernstown, just south of Winchester, on Sunday, March 23, 1862. Jackson didn’t like to fight on the sabbath, but this was an excellent opportunity to destroy a Union brigade. When Jackson discovered that Ashby had seriously underestimated Union strength, it was too late to back off. This was the one and only defeat for Jackson in the Civil War.
