The Price of Loyalty: Southern Unionism in the Civil War Era

On Thursday, March 23, Professor Elizabeth R. Varon will moderate "The Price of Loyalty: Southern Unionism in the Civil War Era," a discussion with historians Brian C. Neumann and Clayton J. Butler. The event will begin at 5pm, and it will be free and open to the public.

Neumann and Butler both received their PhDs from UVA in 2020, and they published their first books with LSU Press in 2022. Neumann now serves as the Nau Center's Managing Director and Digital Historian, and he will discuss his book, Bloody Flag of Anarchy: Unionism in South Carolina during the Nullification Crisis. Butler, who works as the Marketing and Sales Associate at UVA Press, will discuss his book, True Blue: White Unionists in the Deep South during the Civil War and Reconstruction.
